DOCOMO Open Innovation Cloud™ Screen Transmission Demonstration: Maximum of 60 Frames per Second Achieved

On February 28, 2020, Splashtop conducted an experiment to measure screen transmission using NTT DOCOMO Inc.’s 5G-compatible cloud infrastructure, “DOCOMO Open Innovation Cloud™”. In the experiment, Splashtop Business was used. After linking the connection source and destination PCs in a 5G environment, the maximum frame rate (fps) was measured.

Frame rate refers to the number of still images that a video can record in a single second. Just like a flip book, the more frames there are, the smoother the video plays.

After authenticating the Splashtop server online, the destination PC constructed inside the DOCOMO Open Innovation Cloud™ and the source PC connected via 5G were able to achieve screen transmission of 60 fps through a peer-to-peer connection.

In general, it is said that 2D films can be played in 24 fps, 3D films in 48 fps, and TV content in 29.97 fps without an issue. 60 fps is the approximate value at which, even when playing games with large amounts of data on TVs or PCs, the display does not stop and playback is smooth, allowing for a comfortable experience.

Along with the commercialization of 5G, one of the fields generating the most excitement is long-distance support for video transmission. This is because it is believed that using 5G environments to achieve frame rates higher than conventionally possible will allow for the sharing of videos with others in real-time with smooth playback.

Going forward, Splashtop will continue to strive for the commercialization of 5G-compatible services.
