My Netbook with Splashtop

lenovo s10

As I've said many times, Splashtop is perfect for Netbooks. I can recall the very first time I saw the very first netbook, the EeePC. I wondered if it would ever take off. I think it is safe to say that it has taken off and inspired a huge market. Recently I've been using the Lenovo S10 a lot because Splashtop is available on it and because it is definitely one of the very best netbooks out there. I travel around a lot. I spend a lot of time in coffee shops and between a couple offices so I'm a great target for a netbook. Also, I have embraced web apps which makes a netbook even easier to use. I've been working on how to really configure my netbook to suit my needs. Here's what I've done:

Made sure that when I get into Splashtop it has all my "stuff"

1. Setup wifi in my favorite coffee shops (and work) and saved the location
2. Put all my Music and Photos (mostly music) on a 16GB SD Card
3. Under Tools/When Splashtop Browser Starts - set it to "show my windows and tabs from last time"
4. Went to the Configuration Panel and had the bottom dock auto hide
5. Setup my chat accounts in pigeon and my Skype to remember me.

Web applications I use - because I auto-populate my tabs these generally all open up upon starting the Splashtop Browser.

1. Gmail - Gmail is my favorite webmail application, so easy!
2. Peoplebrowsr - this is my web-based Twitter Client - a must for anyone who uses Twitter
3. 12seconds.tv - I utilize this video community a lot - the integrated webcam makes it awesome
4. Zoho for documents - Sometimes I also use Google Docs.
5. Blip.fm - I've really been enjoying this site for music and I also regularly utilize Pandora. Of course I use our built in music player to listen to music off of my SD Card.

These 5 generally cover what I'm doing when I first start my machine.

From there, I'm all over the place using Google Reader to check my news feeds, I read Engadget religiously, I'm all over Hulu whenever my boss isn't looking when I have time and I'm not working hard and I check Woot at least once a day.

Several people have wondered about the real utility of netbooks. For many people it is their 2nd (or 3rd) machine. It's interesting that people tend to create a bond with their machine. Your mobile phone, for instance, becomes an important part of your life. Will netbooks also serve that role? For me, spending the time to configure my netbook and think about how I use it has made all the difference. Next up I have to figure out which stickers I want to put on it. :)

i cant enable splashtop in my s10.
i cant find download link for s10 splashtop in this site or in lenovo site as well.

Hary, according to Lenovo (http://www.lenovo.com/news/us/en/2009/01/consumer_pc.html), the S10 with Quick Start (Splashtop) will become available in March. I am sorry to say that the version you have probably does not have Splashtop pre-installed. Not sure if it will be possible to update it once the Quick Start version is out. Please check with Lenovo again in March.

I'm setting up a Lenovo S10e and loved seeing Splashtop...wow, it is ultra FAST! However, I ran into a snafu, when I took Windows off to add Ubuntu, the Splashtop is gone. I thought it was on the motherboard? Can I get it back and have Ubuntu too? Thanks.

Dear author, could you be so kind to describe your installaion of Splashtop step-by-step.
I have no luck with Lenovo Quickstart 1.0.8.2 on my S10.
Thanks in advance

P.S.:

if one purchases s10 and not s10e can you add splashtop? I only see download link for s10E. the s10 I am looking to buy does not appear to have it. also this partition thing it seems to take out a lot of disk space. I am not sure if that is really worth it in lieu of recovery disks. but I love the way it looks. definitely feels better than any other netbook out there

Iv and Observer - there is a way to update older S10 models to add Splashtop, however, do it at your own risk ("not supported"). You will need to update the BIOS to the latest version (see instructions at the link provided by Observer). Also, I believe Lenovo has not yet released the S10 Splashtop image, only the one for S10e. I heard the S10e image works on the S10, but I have not tried it myself. You may want to wait until Lenovo posts the official S10 installer and instructions, similar to the ones for S10e.

splashtop wifi connection fail to connect after changing the internal wireless card.
but it work fine under windows xp.
any help?

The people if have problems with wifi on splashtop, only need the upgrade bios in the website/support. I solve this problem.

Hi - I love the Ideapad S10 (had it for all of 2 days) and I will love the Slashtop, but for the fact that WiFi doesn't work. I have a standard setup with WEP (Open) security. Any help will be awesome.

Aravind, sorry to hear you are having a problem with WiFi. WEP is supported and should work. I will contact you by email to get more technical information, but make sure that you go through the Splashtop network manager, enable WiFi, and setup the network you want to use.

Is your Lenovo the S10e? And does it have the 80GB hard drive? Buy.com has a sale on them today, and I really am thinking of upgrading my EeePC with a 7" screen. I would love to have Splashtop on it as well, but I also think that I want a solid state drive instead of the hard drive. Your thoughts? Thanks.

I have an S10. 160GB HDD, 1 GB Ram. Works great, just love it. It's so handy too. Plus, the Splashtop works, just not with one of the routers I had. I saw the one on sale - I would think you would need 1GB RAM instead of 512MB, but I agree the solid state drive would be a cool feature.

Another unadvertised feature - the S10 actually displays 1024x768 when connected to an external monitor - the 1024x600 that it comes with is fine, but the bigger display is a plus too.

Thanks for feedback...yeah, if I get it, I would probably add an extra 1gb of RAM and install a Linux distro on it as well.

Rick - I do have the S10e and it has an 80GB hard drive. Personally, I really don't find the SSD to be such a huge advantage but I know that many people do. I love this netbook and am using it constantly. Sorry, by the way, for my slow response - I was out yesterday. Thanks Aravind for representing!

No worries. Thanks very much. It appears that the price is still good on the Lenovo and is a few bucks cheaper at Macmall.com believe it or not. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but the Splashtop feature is just so darn tempting. I wish more Netbooks came with the Splashtop technology or somehow you folks make it easy to add it after market (hint, hint). Thanks again.
