Splashtop - Mobility Awards winner

Splashtop has been named a winner of the 2010 Mobility Awards - Technology Innovation and we could not be more excited. Especially, when some our awesome partners like Acer, HP, and Lenovo which ship Splashtop on their netbooks and notebooks, are also recipients of awards too. Thanks Mobiletrax for the honor. You can check out the full list of recipients here.

CES 2009! We'll be there!

snow in vegas

This is what it looked like in Las Vegas a couple of days ago. They had a rare snow "event" right on the Strip. It snarled traffic, closed the airport and forced everyone to stay inside the luxurious casinos. Sounds horrible, doesn't it? Well, the DeviceVM team will be on hand as usual featuring our Splashtop product running on an array of rad, drool worthy devices in the Innovation Pod. Yep, we're stepping up to the BIG TIME. Our own pod. They call it a pod because it's smaller than a booth but it will be a mighty pod! In addition, we'll be supporting some new threads which I think we're all pretty excited about (we decided if we can't have a giant 3-level booth we might as well look really hot).

Enough rambling, here's where we're at:

Innovation Pods, booth IP200.

So, come and see us. We promise to give you an awesome demo of our latest technology. We also promise that it won't take very long. After all, we boot in seconds.

We love attention (and Happy Thanksgiving).

It was just last week that we found out we won a prestigious award from Popular Science. Plus, we've been getting lots of coverage from places like the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times. Heck, even Howard Stern loves us. Does this make us cool? After all, we're nerdy technology types.

Thank goodness that we won an award that brings us back to our roots (before we got too Hollywood). We're proud to announce that Splashtop won the “2008 Open Source Product Innovation Award" at LinuxWorld China. Yep, our very own Shawn Fang, pictured beautifully above, was on hand to receive the award. This award is very dear to our team who has been working incredibly hard to further Open Source Technology and the mainstream distribution of Linux. Congratulations team!

Another notable piece of news from this week is that Wired Magazine wrote an article titled, "Top 10 Products That Helped Us Forget 2008." The number 7 product was the incredible HP Voodoo Envy (which we still fight about in the office). It's not a long article but it does mention the Voodoo Instant-On Solution. Here's what it says,

"An instant-on OS lets you surf the Web or make Skype calls without booting up Windows. It all adds up to one drool-worthy package."

Yep, Splashtop is getting a lot of attention and why not? It's an incredible product. Recently, I've been using it quite a bit on the new Lenovo S10e. I hope to blog more about my experiences using Splashtop on a Netbook next week. Until then, for those in the US, Happy Thanksgiving!

More good news for DeviceVM!

It was only a week ago when we were all excited about being in the New York Times (on the cover, on a Sunday - not trying to brag, just stating a fact). Then Howard Stern talked about it on his show! I wish that I could share that audio track but it would be inappropriate and would probably violate some copyright law. Let's just say that he saw the potential for some instant adult entertainment.

This week we've got a couple of other accolades to share. First, we were in the San Francisco Chronicle. From a tactical marketing perspective, we're starting to see Splashtop covered by more mainstream press all the time. I think this really highlights the shared pain point felt by many consumers. Lengthy boot time is a ubiquitous pain felt by almost everyone. Here's a great quote from the article:

Michael Gartenberg, vice president of mobile strategy at research firm Jupitermedia, said the instant-on features will be more attractive on netbooks and ultra-portable notebooks, allowing them to be used quickly, like a smart phone. "As more users migrate to laptops and want to be able to use them ubiquitously, waiting for it to boot or come out of hibernation can be frustrating," Gartenberg said. "That's why we're seeing these tactical solutions."

Next up, we've been selected by Popular Science as the Best of What's New in 2008! This is a very prestigious award and we're honored to have received it. It appears that we're in the category of computing and the second product listed (right after Spore). You can see their description of Splashtop here. This is from the press release:

Each year Popular Science reviews thousands of products across a variety of categories from Automotive technology to Computing to Green tech. 100 technology innovations are selected to receive the prestigious Popular Science award and be profiled in the December issue of Popular Science Magazine.

Thanks, Popular Science, for the honor!

DeviceVM wins Audience Award for Virtualization at Under the Radar

utr

I haven't blogged for a bit because I had a baby. Well, I didn't but my wife did. So, I apologize for being late with this post about our success at Under the Radar, which was almost two weeks ago. In my last post, I put up a nice video of Mark's great presentation. The thing that I didn't highlight enough was that this presentation showcased our virtualization solution for the very first time. In fact, Under the Radar has different categories for company presentations. Ours was in the virtualization category. According to the audience present at the Microsoft Campus in Mountain View, DeviceVM was the best company in the virtualization category.

This begs the question, "why was the audience so taken with Splashtop?" There were other great companies present. My favorite (other than us) was JumpBox. Mark's presentation was great but I like to think it wasn't just his charm that won us an audience award. I believe that our solution touches a pain point that every consumer feels about using a PC. They are slow to turn on, slow to turn off and don't get us online fast enough. I think that when the audience members recognized the promise of a better computing experience they were excited and they wanted it on their PC.

It doesn't matter how whizbang our technology is (and it is pretty whizbang, by the way) - at the end of the day our solution solves a real problem faced by consumers on a daily basis and that makes it exciting and attractive. Get online seconds after you hit the power button while letting Windows boot in the background. Your favorite web apps at your fingertips. Zero to Internet in seconds. However you want to say it, consumers want a better computing/online experience. That's why Splashtop won the Audience Award for Virtualization at Under the Radar.

Splashtop picked as Under the Radar Presenter

uradar

We are very excited this morning that DeviceVM and Splashtop has been selected to present at the Under the Radar Conference March 19-20 in Mountain View. There are a lot of cool companies that have been selected to present. You can check them all out on their homepage. We applied for Under the Radar hoping we could get in. Apparently hundreds of companies apply for the honor to present but only a handful are picked. Getting to participate is a great honor and the whole team is really pumped up.

Now that we've been picked the pressure is on! We're going to have to do a great job presenting and answering questions. Here's a description of the basic format from their website:

"UTR conferences showcase 32 of the most disruptive startups in a sector. We take a hands-on look at the true innovators fueling an explosion of emerging technology and new business opportunities. Each company demo's their product to a panel of industry experts who are active in the sector, along with an audience of early-adopter technology insiders. Both audience and experts get a chance to ask questions and offer feedback on business models, market opportunities, areas for improvement, and how best to reach out and build up their audience. The conference also offers ample time for presenters and attendees to network and share ideas and information."

Those panelists and industry experts that are described above are a formidable group. They include folks like Kara Swisher from the Wall Street Journal, Brad Stone from the New York Times, Aaron Ricadela from Business Week, Ellen McGirt from FastCompany, Robert Scoble from Scobelizer and Rafe Needleman of WebWare.

Well, now we have to get prepared! Mark Lee, our CEO, is going to do the demonstration which means that we have a month and a half to make sure that we have something special to show and that the demo machine is all charged up and ready. Congratulations team and supporters on another great honor and thanks DealMaker Media for choosing Splashtop!

CES Day One

We're having a lot of fun already. Oh, wait! I meant we are working very hard here at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Want to come and see us? This is where we're at.

Our booth has been pretty busy so far. We have had a lot of press, bloggers, interested consumers and friends stopping by and hanging out. Asus has been very helpful in making sure we have everything we need to make a good impression on our visitors. It's been especially cool for me to get to know the Asus people better.

I haven't had a lot of opportunity to walk around yet. I think that there's a lot to see. The HP booth looks especially awesome this year and they're giving out these big laptop stickers. I need to grab one of those.

Tonight is ShowStoppers. That's where we're going to get our award from PC World as one of the 25 most innovative products of 2007. After that we're going to celebrates David's birthday. He's 30. Ouch.

Splashtop wins PC World honor!

top25

I'm very excited to announce that Splashtop by DeviceVM has been named as one of the Top 25 Most Innovative Products of 2007 by PC World. In fact, we're number 10 (right behind Facebook). Here's a snippet from the article:

Innovation: Allows a PC to boot in a few seconds into a simple, secure interface with a Mozilla-based browser.

Benefit: Lets you save energy by keeping your PC powered off when you're not using it.

DeviceVM's Linux-based technology allows you to boot into its Internet-appliance-like platform in a few seconds, so you don't have to spend minutes waiting for Windows to start up. If all you want to do is check your Web mail account or make a Skype call, for example, you'll save both time and watt-hours. Though the technology is currently shipping as a feature only in the Asus P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi AP motherboard, it should be more widely available in desktops, laptops, and additional motherboards in 2008.

Thanks PC World! We're very honored to receive such a prestigious award. Look for even more innovations in 2008. Happy New Year!
