Thunderbird allows for the use of add-ons! The one that this instant on OS could use is the Thunderbird SynchKoLab add-on with calendar and contact synch (can be read only) with IMAP server. So - this would work with no local storage, AND would allow for this instant on Desktop (or for Laptops) to have the ability to synchronize data between multiple email clients (bringing along the contact and calendar data for use)!

This strikes me as a great platform to build an HTPC (Home Theatre PC). If you could have a system that boots into, say, MythTV in seconds (bypassing the initial options screen), this would be the ideal HTPC for the living room. Imagine instant access to your music and video collection, as well as streaming content, in just a few seconds. Is this on the cards?

Sounds cool, can't wait trying it! The fact that it's linux makes it even better!

A combination of splashtop and VDI would be a great way to consolidate computing.

As a bonus, you could support offlining of VM's running remotely.

Here is how it could work...

splashtop+kvm:

splashtop on laptop should run a kernel with kvm support.
Remote desktop using ICE and SPICE.
User wants to offline..
The VM is checkpointed and transfered to laptop.
Desktop using ICE and SPICE on local VM.
User goes online again. Sync up the checkpoint to server.

Afrer initial full sync the later checkpoints could be incremental.
