ASUS Shows Faith in Splashtop
Splashtop, for the uninitiated, is an embedded Linux environment that we first saw with ASUS' P5E3 Deluxe late last year. Since then, Splashtop has been rolled out into other ASUS motherboards, such as the P5E3 Premium, M3N-HT Deluxe and a few others... In a unique agreement, Splashtop will be featured on all upcoming ASUS motherboards, including the P5Q Deluxe, P5Q-WS, P5Q3 Deluxe and also the P5Q-E...

Asus making more motherboards with embedded Linux
...The only problem with the P5E3 was its eye-popping price: $350. It also requires ultraexpensive DDR3 RAM. But apparently, the Splashtop experiment has been a success, and Asus is releasing new, more down-to-earth motherboards with the featur...

Splashtop Linux desktop to appear on every Asus motherboard
DeviceVM, the makers of Splashtop, just made a big announcement though. Their technology will no longer be restricted to the top-shelf motherboards and will see a much wider release. At first it will be featured on Asus’ P5Q (high-efficiency design, Intel P45 chipset) family of motherboards, starting with the P5Q Deluxe, P5Q-WS, P5Q3 Deluxe, and P5Q-E. Later Splashtop will be featured on all the company’s motherboards, over a million units a month.

ASUS Massively Expands SplashTop Boards
ASUS has announced today that they have expanded their selection of SplashTop-enabled motherboards by four with the introduction of the ASUS P5Q motherboard family. In addition, it has been announced by ASUS that they plan to roll-out SplashTop on their "entire motherboard product portfolio, starting with over one million motherboards per month." Congratulations to the DeviceVM folks and the Linux community with this being a major win.

Splashtop Linux desktop helps fight global warming
The Splashtop Linux desktop, supposing you have the right motherboard, allows users to get onto the internet in seconds from a computer that was turned off. It does not require a full boot up into the main OS to access it so it means your computer can be kept off much of the time (though not unplugged) and quickly accessed as necessary. Using the application it should be easy to keep your computer off much of the time without having to wait a few minutes just to check your email or visit a website.

Give your computer a rest for Earth Day
Did you know that the electricity required to keep a PC running overnight generates up to 51 lbs of CO2 every month, and the combined energy wasted by consumer electronics in standby mode is as high as 10% of all residential power consumption in developed countries?

Splashtop "Instant On" motherboard
So I have had on my desk for about week now a sweet little ASUS laptop containing one of the new Splashtop motherboards. Don’t know what Splashtop is? Well Splashtop is a motherboard that contains, in the onboard memory, a special version of Linux (based on Small Linux - formerly tinyX) that runs right after the bios...

What's new with Operating Systems?
In the light of fast-paced changes on the browser front, are users finding that innovation at the desktop has stagnated? Has it? Or is there a lot brewing under the hood that were just not aware of, yet take for granted as our user experience improves incrementally?

A hands-on look at the Splashtop instant-on Linux environment
San Jose-based startup DeviceVM made waves last year when it unveiled Splashtop, a nearly instant-on Linux environment stored in the flash memory usually reserved for motherboard BIOS. The company previewed an upcoming revision to Splashtop at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in January, then gave us the chance to take a hands-on look at this intriguing system software.

Tip of the Trade: SplashTop
A typical Windows PC or server takes anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds to boot up. But that's just the beginning of the startup process: All the nagware, automatic updates, malware scans, hardware scans, indexing, connecting to network shares, and whatever applications want to start up after boot have to run through their paces. This can consume as much as another 30 minutes if you're unlucky, although around five to six minutes is more typical. If you're in a hurry, there's not much you can do except find something else to do— unless you have a DeviceVM's SplashTop-enabled computer.

ASUS Expands Splashtop Mobo Selection ...
DeviceVM and ASUS are today announcing that they have expanded their selection of motherboards that ship with SplashTop (a.k.a. "Express Gate") technology. We've been enthralled by SplashTop, an embedded instant-on Linux desktop environment, since we had first looked at this technology on the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard. DeviceVM's SplashTop is so interesting that it had even earned the title of being one of the greatest Linux innovations of 2007.

Asustek P5E3 Motherboard Features Embedded "Splashtop" Linux Variant...
...If you are not familiar with it, Splashtop is a Linux variant that provides basic functionality like wired and wireless connectivity, Firefox, Skype and simple games. What's unique about the software is that it runs entirely in RAM. That means you don't have to wait for your computer to boot in order to surf or chat on the internet. With the release of the P5E3, Asustek has become the first manufacturer to implement Splashtop in a motherboard....

Asus P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP
...This alternate operating system, provided by DeviceVM to Asus, is fast and convenient. There's no giant OS to boot before you get into your browser, which is a slimmed-down version of Firefox, not some weird, quasibrowser that doesn't do what you want. There's a Flash plug-in installed so most modern sites render properly. Flash videos play just fine. The system saves all your settings (including bookmarks) in memory, so you don't have to start from scratch every time you fire it up....

Hardware for Webware: A motherboard with embedded Firefox
...Because the DeviceVM platform doesn't have access to the hard disks connected to the motherboard, the system is very secure. So if, say, guests wants to use your PC to check their Web mail, you can boot them into the ExpressGate environment (that's what Asus calls it) and not worry about them junking up your PC. You might want to clear your private data from the Firefox cache first, though...

SplashTop To Splash Onto Notebooks, Desktops...
With the information we've been exposed to and our testing of SplashTop thus far, we believe that this is the start of a revolution. This is not a revolution for just saving a bit of time when your computer starts up, but for the overhaul of the BIOS architecture and the conventional boot process, increased power savings, and if capitalized right is yet another large opportunity for Linux. We believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg for DeviceVM and look forward to monitoring its progress especially over the next three to nine months.
