Mobile World

This week several of us are at the Mobile World Congress in Spain. Since a lot of our business is with the US or Asia-based computer makers, we have not had much presence in Europe - but our products have! Splashtop Remote in particular has been a top seller in many European countries, having reached top iTunes spots in the UK and Germany, among other places.

We've already talked to many journalists, bloggers, and developers at the show. One of the most striking things has been the popularity of Android phones here. I may be biased, having just attended MacWorld in San Francisco, but we got pretty used to hearing "OK, I will try it on my iPhone or iPad". But in Barcelona, we're getting "Can I try it on Android?" a lot more often. And, yes, you can, as long as you have a compatible Android 2.2 phone - Splashtop Remote is in the Android Market.

While we already do good business on iOS and Android, our vision is that Splashtop Remote should enable people to fully enjoy PC or Mac content and applications from any mobile device, whether its based on iOS, Android, Windows, or an emerging operating system like MeeGo.

There has been much speculation at MWC about what Nokia will or will not do with MeeGo. While Nokia is one of the founders of MeeGo, and has contributed a lot of open source technology, like Qt, to this platform, MeeGo goes beyond any single OEM. In fact, having released a MeeGo-based version of Splashtop OS to OEM partners, we see a lot of interest for devices other than mobile phones, such as tablets and netbooks.

One of our missions at MWC is to support our friends at Intel in promoting MeeGo for tablets. They announced, and are showing their latest MeeGo UX for tablets here. You can get a good review of that from Avram Piltch @ LAPTOP or Nicole Scott @ Netbooknews.com. In turn, we ported Splashtop Remote to MeeGo, and have been showing it together with Intel.

Here is a photo from the Intel booth, and another one of our tireless MWC trio after the Pepcom press event here in Barcelona:

Back from Vegas

Our team is back from CES in Las Vegas. And in tech, what happens in Vegas definitely does not stay in Vegas. As expected, this year’s show was all about tablets. We saw cool new tablets from the likes of Vizio and Motorola, and many tablet related technologies, like the Tegra 2 chip from NVIDIA, which promises to take multitasking and gaming to a different level on mobile devices.

For us, CES was about showing the newly announced Splashtop Remote for Android tablets and phones. We are stoked about the Best of CES award that Laptop Magazine gave to our new product, and about sharing this honor with Tegra 2 and Motorola Xoom.

Another interesting thing about CES was how many people were recording videos. We are no strangers to video interviews, but this year it seemed that just about everyone was taping demos and posting these videos online. Here is a sampling of videos about Splashtop, in case you did not get to visit us at CES:

Splashtop at CES 2011

This week many of us are heading to Las Vegas for the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. CES has been great to us in the past, bringing us many interesting connections and awards, like the PC World "25 Most Innovative Products" and the "Best of CES" from Laptop Magazine. This year, the event is promising to be all about tablets. There are many new Android based tablets launching from the likes of Samsung and Vizio, and Windows-based tablets are supposed to be not far behind. We will be making our own announcement related to tablets at CES – can't share that with you quite yet. MeeGo-compliant Splashtop at IDF

We announced the next-generation MeeGo-compliant version of Splashtop at the Intel Developers Forum last week. In case you were not at the event, here is an excerpt of the keynote by Intel SVP Renée James talking about Splashtop and DeviceVM:

You can see the entire keynote presentations at the IDF site.

The MeeGo-based next-generation version of Splashtop received a lot of interest. Here are a couple of videos from the show floor, courtesy of our friends at Laptop Magazine and Engadget:

Splashtop Remote - now in the app store

Companion devices like the iPad are increasingly replacing laptops in our backpacks and briefcases. Next year, you can expect up to 50 million iPads to be in the market, joined by tablets running other operating systems. If you are wondering what a Windows 7 tablet might feel like... there is now a way for you to try it on your iPad!

Introducing the latest addition to the Splashtop product family - Splashtop Remote. Now you can get to your PC and experience Windows from an iPad. Check out this video:

Splashtop Remote connects your iPad -and in the near future, other mobile devices - to your PC. So, Windows does not actually run on your mobile device. Instead, you interact with it remotely. However, all of your music, videos, and Windows applications are now within easy reach. Have you ever had a "I wish I could get to my computer..." moment? Then Splashtop Remote should be on your iPad.

Splashtop Remote is on sale in the Apple App Store. So check it out!

Coming to the Linux stage near you

We have been involved with a number of MeeGo initiatives driven by the Linux Foundation for some time now. As you may know, Mark, our CEO, joined the LF board, and two of our executives, Alex and Cliff, are directing LF operations in Taiwan and China respectively. In June, we announced a MeeGo "remix" of our Splashtop product.

If you are interested in MeeGo and Linux, there are several upcoming events we are participating in that I want to let you know about. Hopefully you can make it to one of these.

MeeGo Seminar

On July 26, Cliff will be speaking at Japan's 1st MeeGo Seminar.

LinuxCon

On August 11, Mark will be at the LinuxCon in Boston, talking about where Linux Desktop is succeeding. He is on a panel with folks form Novel and Qualcomm, moderated by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of Computer World.

Coscup

Finally, on August 14, Ted Chou from our Hangzhou engineering office will be speaking at the COSCUP / GNOME.Asia Summit in Taipei.

Splashtop - Mobility Awards winner

Splashtop has been named a winner of the 2010 Mobility Awards - Technology Innovation and we could not be more excited. Especially, when some our awesome partners like Acer, HP, and Lenovo which ship Splashtop on their netbooks and notebooks, are also recipients of awards too. Thanks Mobiletrax for the honor. You can check out the full list of recipients here.

World Wide Splashtop

Any start-up company has to focus its limited resources to create a product that really really speaks to its target users. One place, however, were you should not cut corners is internationalization. Since its inception, Splashtop has been serving users as far from our California headquarters as Poland, Brazil, or Malaysia. In fact, if we look at where our new users came from in February, we see that the US accounts for under a half of our growth:

World Wide Splashtop

We have been stoking international use of Splashtop in a variety ways. On a very basic level, we have to enable users to type with a variety of local input methods. A big shout out here is due to the SCIM open source project that we benefit from. Thanks, guys! On an application level, we have been seeking out partners who enjoy popularity in their local markets. For example, Baidu powers our search in China, and Yandex - in Russia. Our Splashtop 2.0 product also incorporates a ton of local content from various markets where Splashtop is used.

Being international is a big deal for us. In fact, Cliff Miller, our Chief Strategy Officer based in Beijing, is out in California this week giving a keynote at the Worldware conference, which is all about global software strategies.

If you do software - whether in a start-up or in a large company, don't forget that there is a big world out there beyond your borders - a world of opportunity!
