The Splashtop Jailbreak!

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

hackalacka

It was bound to happen eventually. Some smart folks over at Phoronix Forums have hacked Splashtop. Well, it’s about time…

The fact that folks want to hack Splashtop is exciting and we want to be as supportive as possible. Just because something has been “hacked” doesn’t mean it’s less safe. We want to encourage folks to explore our product and help us to make it better.

We’ve been working hard trying to get Splashtop onto as many machines as possible over the last few months through proliferation programs. The development community has been promised an SDK from us for a while. We’re very glad to see some talented developers take matters into their own hands.

In fact, we’re inspired here at Splashtop HQ and will work to get the SDK out quickly. We have an early beta version ready now and will start working with selected developers to refine and deliver a polished version. Please e-mail us at developer@splashtop.com if you’re interested in helping out with the effort…and thanks to all of you for pulling us forward!

Have we launched? Is this thing on?

Monday, October 8th, 2007

We weren’t supposed to launch until Wednesday but a bunch of articles have already started to surface about Splashtop. We are a bit overwhelmed by the attention and excited that readers of popular publications such as Engadget and BoingBoing are interested in our Instant Desktop environment. We are trying to track both the enthusiasm and the suggestions in order to create a better product. We haven’t even launched and I already feel like we’re behind on features. :)

Nonetheless, please keep the commentary coming. I will publish every comment on this site unless it is vulgar or inappropriate (those just go to close friends). Here’s a quick breakdown about where we’re at and what Splashtop is about…

Also, to clarify one thing: Splashtop is branded as Express Gate on certain motherboards built by Asus. These are rather high-end motherboards and are the first products to market with our technology inside (positive comments on blogs greatly appreciated). Our goal is to have Splashtop on many more notebooks and desktops by Q1 of next year.

The point of Splashtop is to get you surfing the web seconds after you press that power button. Many people have asked what other applications we might support in the future. While we’re excited to support many more applications, we’re starting with two (Splashtop Browser and Skype) and we will add more in the future.

Some things I hope to address in the next couple of days are important subjects which have been brought up by the press and user commentary. These include allowing outside developers to build complementary applications and being able to update the Splashtop environment from within Splashtop itself. Thanks for your interest in Splashtop and keep the comments coming.

Welcome to the Splashtop Blog!

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

My name is Sol Lipman. I am honored to blog on behalf of the entire Splashtop team! It is with great excitement and anticipation that I write the first blog post on the new Splashtop website! While we’re still in stealth, I wanted to introduce myself and our parent company, DeviceVM. First of all, let me explain this stealth business. We are launching our first version of the Splashtop Desktop in the next few weeks. When we do launch, I will use this blog to give many more details, tips and isights into our products, technology and company. Until that time, I will pique your interest with posts about our company, the industry and random facts about myself (for example, I’ll bet you didn’t know that I play a pretty incredible blues harp!). I’ll also direct you to relevant posts about interesting happenings in our industry.

About myself

I live in Santa Cruz, CA and work in San Jose, CA at the Splashtop World Headquarters. I love drinking coffee, smoking the occasional cigar and playing with gadgets. I read Engadget and LiveDigitally every day and I’m always interested in all the cool, new Web 2.0 products on Techcrunch. I’m an avid Facebook User so feel free to add me, I’d love to be your friend (just don’t poke me too much).

How this blog is going to work

This blog is all about the community. I see my role as more of a blog “coordinator” as I feel it’s more about this being a 2-way communication method, not just from us to you. It is important for everyone to be able to participate in commenting on anything I write about, submitting stories that you think might be relevant and telling us how we can improve our product. If there is a subject you’d like to see on this blog, let me know - I’d be more than happy to write about it.
